The NYCHA Comic Book Program is a 16 week workshop collaboration between NYCHA’s Creative Arts Unit and the 12Comics Educational Learning Support Program. During the course of this unique weekly after-school entrepreneurial program, participants create original superhero characters using online tools then work as a team to develop, write and storyboard an adventurous tale that challenges each student to dive into researching, conceiving and writing a story. The group dynamics also requires the participants to hone their verbal and presentation skills as they develop and explain the particular character traits of their heroes’ superpowers and abilities, their origins, and their place within the team. The drawing process for each comic book enlists professional artists to render the book according to the story submitted by the students and edited by NYCHA staff. The characters created by each participant become their intellectual property and a percentage of proceeds resulting from www.12comics.com online sales of the comic book and merchandise such as mugs, t-shirts, etc… goes directly to each participant. The program culminates in a ceremony to present the group of newly minted authors a copy of the printed and published comic book as well as their first commission check from sales generated by the release and subsequent purchase of the book. For more information please call 212-306-2920 or visit our website at www.nyc.gov/html/nycha.
